These resources cover 7 core skills for supporting and maintaining positive student behaviour. Learn how to apply these skills, watch examples of other teachers’ practice and use our reflection tools to refine your own practice.
General
This course introduces the core skills used in classroom management practice.
Deliberate pause
A deliberate pause breaks the flow of verbal communication to gain students’ attention, emphasise a point or give students’ time to process information, follow a direction or correct behaviours.
Scanning your class
Scanning is the practice of consistently and intentionally monitoring all students to gather information about students’ behaviour and participation in learning.
Circulation
Intentional circulation is systematically moving around the classroom and standing in key places to observe and actively interact with students.
Non-verbal correction
Non-verbal corrections provide students with a clear, visible corrective gesture that acts as a behavioural prompt without the use of words.
Clear communication
Clear communication is the use of clear and concise language to set expectations, give instructions and address and correct behaviour.
Voice control
Voice control includes the tone, pitch, volume and pace you use to deliver instruction.
Acknowledgement and praise
Verbal or non-verbal acknowledgement recognises students demonstrating expected behaviours. Praise emphasises the effort students have made to exceed behaviour expectations specific to them.
