The Teaching for How Students Learn videos demonstrate evidence-based teaching practices in primary and secondary schools, including a school for students with intellectual disability and complex support needs. They exemplify the practices in AERO's learning and teaching model.

The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) has developed a model of learning and teaching that identifies the most effective and efficient teaching practices aligned with how students learn. These practices are further described in our practice guides.

These videos complement AERO's model and demonstrate how a range of primary and secondary schools, including a school for students with intellectual disability and complex support needs, use evidence-based practices. The videos are exemplars that feature a range of difference subjects, year levels and contexts.

This collection includes:

  • practice videos, which focus on a specific teaching practice in different schools and lessons
  • long lesson videos, which feature extended sequences of teaching to show how evidence-based practices work together.

How to use the resources

Teachers

  • Watch the practice videos with a copy of the related practice guide to identify evidence-based strategies in action and connect to your own classroom practice.
  • Use AERO’s model of learning and teaching to reflect on how different teaching techniques work together to support learning, drawing comparisons between the video examples and your own teaching and school context.
  • Discuss your observations with colleagues or a mentor to further refine your practice or consider which techniques you might apply in the classroom.

School leaders

  • Use the videos and related practice guides in staff meetings or team discussions to prompt professional dialogue.
  • Drive school-wide instructional improvement through targeted professional learning activities on applying specific teaching techniques and strategies across the school.
  • Encourage teachers to use the videos and practice guides to make a plan to develop their practice and seek feedback to monitor the impact for their students.
