In a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS):
- all students receive Tier 1 instruction in the curriculum
- some students receive Tier 2 intervention to develop reading comprehension (typically within year-level curriculum contexts)
- a few students receive Tier 3 intervention for word reading.
There are many reading intervention programs available in Australia that save secondary schools time in programming, planning and developing resources.
This practice resource provides a non-exhaustive list of programs and resources Australian secondary schools can use to support students struggling with reading and unpacks strengths and weaknesses of each. It forms part of a series of guidance created in partnership with the Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation (DSF).
All of the programs and resources listed in this practice resource have been evaluated according to our recommended criteria for selecting a successful intervention program. However, inclusion on this list doesn’t indicate endorsement by AERO or DSF. Schools are encouraged to perform their own evaluation to determine suitability and whether additional resources are needed.
