Once students understand how to write sentences, they can progress to using paragraphs to organise the knowledge they want to communicate. To become successful writers, students must be explicitly taught how to structure different types of paragraphs and apply them across all subject areas.
This practice guide uses examples from a range of subjects to demonstrate how paragraph writing can be explicitly taught across learning areas. It will help you understand and model writing different types of paragraphs for:
- short responses: describe, explain and discuss paragraphs
- extended responses: introduction, analyse, evaluate and conclusion paragraphs.
This guide is part of a suite of resources for teachers and school leaders to support explicit writing instruction in the classroom. It can be used in conjunction with the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO)’s guides on simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences and sentence combining.
