AERO’s model of learning and teaching consists of teaching practices that align with how students learn.

These practices are categorised into 4 phases.

The ‘Planning’ phase is about structuring and sequencing the knowledge students will acquire. This helps them develop well-organised mental models in their long-term memory. So, it aligns with the ‘Knowledge and Memory’ element of the model.

The ‘Instruction’ phase is about managing cognitive load for students when they’re learning something new. This recognises that students can better retain and recall their learning when they process limited amounts of information at a time. This aligns with the ‘Retention and Recall’ element.

The ‘Gradual Release’ phase is about maximising students’ retention, consolidation and application of their learning. Over time, this helps students to develop and demonstrate mastery. So it aligns with the ‘Mastery and Application’ element.

And the ‘Enabling’ phase looks at ways you can foster a safe, supportive and learning-focused environment. The Enabling phase wraps around the others, highlighting the reciprocal relationship between focused attention and effective learning. So this aligns with the ‘Attention and Focus’ element of the model.

You might choose to explore the model vertically, by focusing separately on the elements of how students learn and on the teaching practices that align with them. Or, you might like to explore it horizontally by focusing on one element of student learning and its implications for your teaching.

Even though the model is presented in a linear way, many of the practices are interdependent and reinforce one another. So looking at related areas of the model can further strengthen the positive impact of the practices within it.
