This explainer draws on emerging evidence to provide considerations for policymakers on using AI in schools.

Artificial intelligence (AI) – particularly generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) – use is becoming increasingly prominent in Australian schools. This presents potential new opportunities for supporting teaching and learning, while raising important questions about how AI tools can be designed, implemented and used safely, equitably and effectively in schools. As AI use in schools increases, policymakers face significant challenges in creating the conditions for AI to support learning and teaching, while managing potential risks.

There’s still limited research on the impact of AI use in schools. This explainer provides an overview of the emerging evidence base and identifies 3 key considerations for policymakers, including:

  • developing clear, evidence-informed policies and guidance to inform decisions about AI use
  • supporting effective implementation through access to quality AI tools and building capability
  • strengthening the evidence base through ongoing research, monitoring and evaluation.

We’ve developed a complementary explainer with considerations for teachers and school leaders. We’ll continue to monitor the evidence and provide updated guidance as the evidence base strengthens and matures.
