New resources give teachers more ways to build calm, learning-focused classrooms

The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) has published its final set of classroom management resources designed to help schools, school leaders and teachers create effective learning environments.

The practical, evidence-based resources were developed as part of the Engaged classrooms through effective classroom management project, funded by the Australian Government.

They include updated versions of AERO’s 21 foundational classroom management resources, first published in 2023, as well as new resources that provide teachers and leaders with more ways to engage with the guidance, including:

  • short-form learning for busy teachers via an interactive tool offering curated learning sequences and micro courses that give concise overviews of key practices
  • guidance summaries on key topics, including proactive and preventative approaches, responding to escalated behaviour, responding to persistent disengaged and disruptive behaviour, and teacher wellbeing in the classroom
  • support for a whole-school approach, such as materials to help school leaders run professional practice development sessions with staff, and reflection resources to help teams identify strengths and areas for development and plan improvement.

AERO CEO Dr Jenny Donovan said students learn best in well-managed classrooms.

“All students deserve to learn in safe and supportive classrooms, where expectations are clear and consistently reinforced,” Dr Donovan said.

“However, we also know that managing behaviour is one of the more demanding parts of a teacher’s job.

“These resources have been tested in Australian schools and refined with input from teachers and leaders, so they are practical and ready to use.”

Dr Donovan said the resources would also help school leaders build a shared understanding of effective classroom management across their staff.

“When a whole school is working together to ensure a consistent evidence-based approach to managing behaviour, students experience clear and predictable expectations from one classroom to the next, and teachers feel better supported,” she said.

“School systems and sectors can also draw on these resources to support professional learning and help embed effective practice at scale.”

The updated and new resources draw on the evidence in AERO’s discussion paper, Effectively managing classrooms to create safe and supportive learning environments.

They were shaped through consultation with AERO’s Panel of Educators, Teachers and Leaders, First Nations Expert Reference Group, parent and carer representatives, inclusive practice experts, allied health professionals, system and sector staff, and student behaviour expert Dr Tim McDonald.

All of AERO’s classroom management resources are now available on AERO’s website:
