Australia’s national education evidence body

About AERO

The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) is Australia's independent education evidence body.

Our vision and objectives

AERO’s vision is for Australia to achieve excellence and equity in educational outcomes for all children and young people through effective use of evidence.

In support of this vision, we:

  • generate high-quality evidence
  • present high-quality evidence that is relevant and accessible
  • encourage adoption and effective implementation of evidence in practice and policy.

Our history

A key recommendation from Through Growth to Achievement: Report of the Review to Achieve Excellence in Australian Schools (sometimes referred to as the Gonski review) was the establishment of a national education evidence body. The intent was to ensure that all school leaders, teachers and educators have access to the best available evidence and resources and are supported to easily and effectively incorporate them into their practice in schools and early childhood services across Australia.

In December 2019, education ministers agreed to create an institute: ‘To position Australia’s educators at the forefront of education research to improve learning outcomes for all children and young people.’

The creation of a national education evidence organisation was one of the national policy initiatives under the 2020 National School Reform Agreement, aimed at lifting outcomes across Australian education.

In 2020 Dr Jenny Donovan was appointed inaugural CEO of the Australian Education Research Organisation and an independent Board was announced.

The Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) was incorporated in 2021, with the vision to achieve excellence and equity in educational outcomes for all children and young people through effective use of evidence.

AERO is jointly funded by the Commonwealth, state and territory governments.

Reconciliation Action Plan

AERO is committed to making a positive contribution to the success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people. As a new organisation, AERO needs to build relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, listen to their priorities and understand how these communities would like us to work with them. AERO will be developing its Reconciliation Action Plan over the course of 2021 to make sure it contains concrete actions, regarding both the work we do and the way we do it, that reflect the expectations of these communities.
